Being the last wedding of the year for me I was secretly hoping it was going to be a good one…and they didn’t disappoint. This wedding was 100% laid back, and by the time I left at 11pm the dance floor was cranking! A beautiful day at South of Perth Yacht Club for the ceremony followed by some minor road traffic control by our expert limo driver provided some great shots for the couple, laughing and smiling all the way, I’m sure these two will live happily ever after- congratulations Alyce and Anthony! Well done!

What a fun day this was! This was a video I made whilst also shooting stills. Along with this video the couple also receive their full ceremony and speeches on the final USB. All of this included as part of my video slideshow package. For enquiries about this great little add on email email@example.com
I started by almost sharing the above on my own FB page then I thought, nah bugger it I’ll put it up on my wedding page and show everyone who I am when not playing paparazzi at weddings!
I have a little “Thakey” family unit, comprising of wifey and two kids who love the ocean and beach as much as Mum and Dad. In the background I have a very helpful brother who can be seen (generally hungover) at wedding expos helping out to spread the Nick Thake brands, along with a graphic designer for a Dad, who helps with all my printing/ advertising needs, and Mum who is amazing at helping out with the kids i.e. stopping them beating down my office door when I’m editing! My business is small, but is reliant on solid help from everyone in my family. Shout out to Wifey for ongoing support and encouragement (and the cute pic above) x
Aside from shooting weddings I am also a Marine Scientist and Commercial Diver, I studied at Murdoch Uni many moons ago, started my career in pearl diving in the northwest with MG Kalis and then worked in the Oil and Gas/ Mining industry specialising in coral health and water quality - it was great for many years living the dream earning awesome money researching corals for a living. Once the mining boom quietened down and the health and safety people focused on squashing scientific diving in industry I found myself at desk waiting for something to happen… and it did!! No sob story about redundancy here, I got an awesome pay out and the opportunity to make a huge lifestyle change to focus on my photography skills, and so became Nick Thake Photography…original huh?!
I started shooting weddings part time in 2008 so was no stranger to the scene, I set out to bring in new clients, build the business and haven’t stopped since. I’m often asked “has your style changed over the years?” - I personally don’t think so, my main focus (dad joke) has been to constantly improve myself and this is something I strive on. I’m highly critical of my own work - ask my wife! I take every comment/ feedback review on board in order to provide a better service to my next couple.
Aside from documenting weddings and trashing the odd dress, I’ve had some amazing photography/videography contracts over the years including reef rehabilitation in the Seychelles, documenting the health of WA’s coral reefs with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and more recently I’ve seen an increase in aerial work using my CASA RePL ticket (drone). I consider weddings my full time career, but will never turn down an amazing diving photography/drone trip somewhere exotic if it arises and suits my calendar!
I’ve proudly had several publications in magazines/books and contributed to the Netflix documentary “Chasing Coral”. If you are interested in my other lines of work, have a browse of the website and check out the gallery www.nickthake.com/artwork and check out a video I produced recently with AIMS Shoals to Shore
I probably should finish it there else this will turn into another essay (see my FAQ blog), but I will close on saying I love the versatility my job brings, meeting so many awesome fun clients and the more family time I have created by going it alone. If you have any enquiries, or questions please use the comments below or email firstname.lastname@example.org
The challenge was set from the first day I met Beth at a Bridal expo...make Damien smile....well I have a clear favourite in this sneak peek, but he probably won't appreciate it ;) In all seriousness, this bridal party was a breeze to work with, highly entertaining not to mention sarcastic...my two favourites!! A beautiful church ceremony followed by the reception at Chapel Farm... the drinks flowed and the dance floor cranked - a brilliant day all round. Congratulations Mr and Mrs Jones!

On the scale of 1-10 for chilled weddings this was a solid 10. The moment I arrived at Eight Willows Retreat in Margaret River I knew I'd be stoked with the images I deliver today. So many fun moments throughout the day, with Harper stealing the show with her cuteness. What a beautiful wedding, congrats to Mr and Mrs Bull!

Q: How many photographers do I get with these packages?
A: 1. I generally shoot alone and always have. If you opt for the additional video package (+$4000) I contract in another awesome videographer who does an amazing job! I work to a well thought out timeline and do the same thing week in week out and have had no complaints to date, plus I don’t want to edit someone else’s photographs!! :)
Q: Do you travel?
A: MOST DEFINITELY! In 2019 I am travelling to the following places for wedding clients: London, Port Douglas, Bali, Broome, Margaret River and Albany. I am very reasonable with my travel costs and packaging everything up so hit me up for a quote!
Q: Can I customise a package?
A: Yes - The best option in this case is to start with the basic 6 hour Package #1 and use the extras to create a bespoke package. I’ll try to apply savings where I can to help.
Q: What type of photobooth do you have?
A: Two actually! I have my original black beauty standalone unit and another new fancy version which I will be using from November onwards. Both booths are totally automatic with touchscreen, social media links, custom branding, choice of backdrops and can be made into both the open (generally preferred) or closed styles booths.
Q: How can you offer the photobooth for FREE?
A: Because I’m a nice guy?? Photography and videography is my “A” game, so if a deal sweetener like a FREE photobooth swings your vote then I’m happy to make it happen given you book within the Expo special deadline (ends next week)…It’s all business at the end of the day!
Q: What do I need to do to book you?
A: Firstly I need to be available, so send an email to email@example.com and check. Then once you have agreed on a package I will knock up an invoice for the deposit stating everything in your package and accompany that with a couple of contracts depending on what you book. The deposit is $1000 with full payment due 28 days prior to the wedding, obviously the contract details all the nitty gritty but essentially its there to make clear what you can expect from me and what I can expect from you!
Q: How soon do we get our photos?
A: In general I bust my arse (much to my wife’s dislike) to get a sneak peek out within 48 hours, then aim for a first look of everything by the 3 week mark. Once you have those images you can select images for fine tuning and for putting into your album (if you have one). Album production takes up to 4 weeks then you receive everything at once.
Q: What sort of equipment do you use?
A: I’m a Canon man for good reason. Their equipment is shit hot! I use 2 x 5dmk3, and 1 x 5dmk4, lenses I have and love 8-15mm L fisheye (for my underwater work), 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24mm f1.4L, 24-70 f2.8L, 35mm f1.4 II, 50mm f1.2L, 70-200 f2.8L II, 85mm f1.2L, 100mm f2.8L IS macro and 135mm f2L. I have heaps of flashes, a DJI Inspire drone with X5 gimbal and Olympus lenses, 3x underwater housings to suit everything above and more recently a DJI Ronin-S for video stabilisation. I only shoot on Sandisk Extreme Pro cards both CF and SD, and use Macs to edit at home and on the move. All of this = “Tech Nerd”
Q: Do you like your work?
A: Great question. I do. (see what I did there)….I really do, I have a blast every weekend and its a great social outing for this daddy of 2, I work hard right from the go, setting the booth up early at the venue to getting those last cheeky night shots during the reception. I interact with everyone, I laugh, I have cried, I sneak a beer in, and I tease you all day to make you smile and feel comfortable. A great asset to my business is my Facebook reviews, please take the time to read what my previous clients have written and you will be able to build a picture of how I run :)
Q: What else do you photograph?
A: Underwater stuff! I currently have a few photography/videography contracts with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) involving Indigenous Ranger Groups developing marine monitoring techniques and also an exciting project studying the effects of seismic activity on benthic animals. Aside from that you’ll see I sell heaps of underwater images on my website www.nickthake.com/artwork-2, I’ve flown all around the world chasing nature from Whalesharks in Maldives (and Exmouth), to bull sharks in fiji, to tiger sharks in Shark Bay to gorillas in Rwanda. Nature photography is a favourite hobby and I’m lucky to have an awesome wife who also loves nature and doesn’t mind being my camera gear sherper haha!
Q: How long have you been shooting weddings?
A: I started with weddings in ~2010. Following working as a Marine Scientist/ Commercial Diver in the oil and gas industry I decided it was a great business opportunity once all the marine work went quiet. I’ve worked on most of the capital projects in the north west, eg. Chevron Gorgon, Wheatstone, BHP RGP4/5/6 and Inpex’s Icythys in Darwin. I occasionally pick up the odd contract in the off season but in general the wedding photography pays the bills. One huge benefit of working offshore/ remotely, I can shoot the shit with most blokes, and make them feel comfortable I’m not a douche bag taking his hard earned money!
